Places to visit

Visit to René Char’s House
This place, specializing in large exhibitions, offers you the chance to discover this famous poet and his workplace. Recognised as one of the greatest poets of his time, René Char was born on the Isle de Sorgue in 1907 and much of his inspiration is drawn from the Sorgue and the Ventoux. In his early days, close to the surrealists, he fought in the Resistance under the name of Captain Alexander. Between 1928 and 1988, the year of his death, he regularly published anthologies and became the friend of some of the greatest artists and writers of the time: Braque, Mirò, Picasso, Staël, Éluard, Camus…
Fontaine de la Vaucluse
At barely two kilometers from Saumane, Fontaine de Vaucluse is an exceptional location. 630 million m3 of water per year flows through. This average rate of flow places this source first in Europe and among the highest in the world. This place through which the Sorgue flows, reaching a depth of 308 metres, has intrigued researchers and scientists since the olden days. Even during periods of drought the water continues to flow.
Abbey of Sénanque (12th century)
Madame Vacances recommends... Settled at the bottom of a valley and surrounded by fields of lavender, this twelfth century Cistercian abbey is existing proof of the influence of the Cistercian order in Provence. A large part of the building escaped the destruction of the revolution: the cloister, with its four galleries, the Period Room, the chimney room and the dormitory. On both sides of the central apse, two semi-circular chapels open out onto the transept. The liturgies, sacred to the monks, are open to the public and are definitely worth a visit. Basic rules of respect and courtesy are to be obeyed by: wear appropriate clothing, no videos or photos, do not disturb their meditation or go in or out during the celebrations.
