Southern Alps

Madame Vacances recommends a trip to the southern Alps, to the charming south-facing wood and stone Chalets de la Diva in the heart of the Alpes Maritimes. For those who want to venture even further up into the mountains we recommend a stay at Le Balcon des Airelles, at an altitude of 1700m in Les Orres, with its swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi and gym.

Luxurious accommodation and magnificent views, and a wide range of activities such as helicopter rides over the mountains, ice driving, snow mobiles, skiing and hiking make these resorts excellent holiday destinations.

Those who love nature and the great outdoors will delight in the opportunity to explore the national parks of Ecrins, Mercantour and Queyras and are sure to be enchanted by the southern Alps, whether in the summer or in the winter.

Places to visit

The Mercantour massif
Just outside of the resort, the marked out paths take you in search of flora and fauna and to the numerous high altitude lakes. Here in the Parc National du Mercantour, nature is well protected in collaboration with our Italian neighbours at the ‘Parco Naturale Alpi Marittime’. The border is only a few kilometres away. In the park, you will find an array of plant species unique to Europe: more than 2000 species and among them, almost 220 considered rare. Around 40 of them, for example the saxifrageare not found anywhere else in the world,
Hiking routes
Announced in September 2008, this ambitious project aims to equip the Maritime Alps with a long hiking route taking in panoramic pathways of 2000m to 2700m altitude. The route will be designed to blend in to its natural environment and will be accessible to all levels of walkers. A large debate has opened up on the subject of this high-altitude walker’s route which would create six new gîtes (out of the main zone).
Excursion in the valley of wonders
Situated 80km north of Nice, at 2872m Mount Bego towers above the impressive landscape of the steep valleys of the ‘Merveilles’ and of ‘Fontanalbe’. The valleys were formed by former glaciers which retreated around 10 000 years ago leaving behind finely polished rocks, a scattering of lakes and above all, the history of our ancestors dating back to 3000 years BC. Nearly 36 000 cuttings are exposed to an open sky in these magnificent valleys…the largest site of rock engravings in Europe.
